The Horse Bust -- Getting the Head Right
Most of a horse's character lives in the head — the flare of a nostril, the depth set into an eye socket, the way the forelock falls. Miss these and you get a shape that looks like a horse. Get them right, and it looks alive.
Our sculptors spend more time here than on any other part of the sculpture. A few things we pay particular attention to:
The eye isn't just a round shape — the orbicularis oculi muscle around it has to be modeled correctly, or the horse ends up looking glassy instead of alert.
Mane strands are carved by hand into the wax, one section at a time, before casting. It's slow work, but it's the only way to get the texture right.
Nostril shape and the cartilage underneath are worked from real equestrian reference photos — not guessed, not simplified.
Facial Detail Precision
The eyes, nostrils, and mane get the most attention. Each feature is refined by hand at the wax stage — this is where a sculpture stops looking like a horse and starts looking like this horse.
Silica Sol Casting
We use silica sol investment casting instead of sand-casting — it holds finer detail. The shell is smooth enough that things like hair texture and skin folds transfer straight from wax to bronze, with barely any grinding needed after.
Custom Patina Finishes
